Signing of the Agreement for the Generic Reactor Safety Review for the ACP1000 Reactor Design

An agreement between the People's Republic of China and the IAEA for a new Generic Reactor Safety Review (GRSR) for the ACP1000 reactor design was signed at the IAEA Headquarters on 17 December 2013. The GRSR provides a review of completely or partially developed safety cases of new designs which are not yet in the licensing stage and is focussed on checking the status of the documentation for completeness and comprehensiveness against IAEA Safety Standards.

Safety Assessment Education and Training Programme Videos added to the Multimedia Library

New video material on different areas of the Safety Assessment Education and Training (SAET) Programme is now available in the GSAN Multimedia Library. Videos cover topics related to the Fundamentals of Safety Assessment, Assessment of Engineering Aspects Important to Safety, Deterministic Safety Assessment and Probabilistic Safety Assessment.

New Defence in Depth Video

A new video has been uploaded onto GSAN in which the concept of Defence in Depth (DID) is explained by Hussam Khartabil, Senior Safety Officer of the Safety Assessment Section of the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety. Also addressed in the video are the main objectives and conclusions of the International Conference on Topical Issues in Nuclear Installation Safety – Defence in Depth – Advances and Challenges for Nuclear Installation Safety.

GSAN Website Statistics

In order to improve the service provided, the GSAN team reviews the site's usage statistics and analyses the data collected to identify any areas that require special attention. Since its establishment on the new software platform in 2012, GSAN has recorded thousands of visits from all across the globe, helping it to achieve its goal of being a global network.

Recently begun European Commission Funded Projects

Within the scope the Peaceful Uses Initiative, the Safety Assessment Section is currently conducting two new projects with funding from the European Commission. The first project titled Design Safety Assessment of Operating Facilities Against Extreme Hazards began in the third quarter of 2013 and is being conducted together with the International Seismic Safety Centre. The second project titled Enhancing the Safety Assessment Capability and Oversight of Nuclear Installations began in the fourth quarter of 2013.
