VATESI Headquarters, Vilnius, Lithuania
5 - 9 May 2014

Safety Review Mission_Lithuania_2.pngThe State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate of Lithuania (VATESI) is in the process of preparing regulatory documents to be used as a basis for the licensing of new nuclear power plants (NPPs) that are expected to be built in Lithuania in the near future.

At the request of VATESI, the IAEA conducted an Expert Mission at VATESI Headquarters in Vilnius, Lithuania from 5 to 9 May 2014 to review new regulatory requirements for the design of NPPs and to conduct a probabilistic safety assessment.

Safety Review Mission_Lithuania_1.pngThe review was conducted by a team of five international experts and IAEA staff and was focussed on checking the completeness and quality of the new draft requirements, these documents representing the most challenging part of the regulations.

The draft documents are largely based on the IAEA Safety Standards and other international documents, taking also into account lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

While the draft documents are generally in good compliance with the IAEA Safety Standards, the review team provided recommendations to further improve upon this.
