The IAEA safety standards provide a system of Safety Fundamentals, Safety Requirements and Safety Guides for ensuring safety. They reflect an international consensus on what constitutes a high level of safety for protecting people and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation. The IAEA safety standards are applicable throughout the entire lifetime of facilities and activities – existing and new – utilized for peaceful purposes, and to protective actions to reduce existing radiation risks.
Safety assessment is only one area covered by the IAEA safety standards.
