IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria

 24-27 February 2015

The report objective is to provide a common international technical basis to be taken into account to reduce the design vulnerability of OPC-induced transients in the site electrical distribution system. A consideration is given to OPCs in the on-site electrical power system that can be challenged when a generator breaker does not open all three phases simultaneously on demand. The motivation to develop this safety report was recent operating experience that shows OPCs may be difficult to detect by the existing plant instrumentation and electrical protection scheme; this could result in severe deterioration of the plant electrical conditions with a subsequent failure of electrical equipment.

As a follow-up to this Consultancy Meeting, the Technical Meeting to Develop, Review and Revise a Draft IAEA Safety Report on the Impact of Open Phase Conditions on Electrical Power Systems of Nuclear Power Plants will be held at IAEA Headquarters from 26 to 29 May 2015.
