The Regional Excellence Programme on Regulatory Capacity Building in Nuclear and Radiological Safety, and Emergency Preparedness and Response in Romania was promoted during a side event at the IAEA 59th General Conference.  This well-attended event, held 15 September, was co-organized by the IAEA, Norway and Romania to highlight the importance of nuclear safety cooperation and to present the benefits of the project for each organization.

Panellists included Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations (Vienna), H. E. Ms. Bente Angell-Hansen, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary; Permanent Representative of Romania to the United Nations (Vienna), H. E. Mr. Cristian Istrate, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary; Ingar Amundsen, Head of the International Nuclear Safety Section, Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority; and Cornelia Spitzer, Head of the Safety Assessment Section, IAEA.

The main message expressed by panellists was that this project is a very good example of practical implementation of the IAEA Safety Standards and adds value not only to the beneficiary, but also to all IAEA Member States. The important role played by the IAEA in adding value by enabling a truly international project was emphasized.
