2024 Tick Vaccination Campaign

Tick Vaccinations Available 13-29 February 2024

The VIC Medical Service (VMS) annual tick immunization campaign starts on 13 February 2023.

WHY – Early summer meningoencephalitis, also called tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), is an illness transmitted by a tick bite in some areas of Austria such as the Vienna woods and other areas near Vienna, Wachau, Styria, Carinthia and Burgenland. Symptoms of TBE include fever, headache and vomiting. Infection with TBE virus may also cause paralysis and can be fatal.

WHO - Staff members, officially recognized dependants, children aged 12-21 and other family members with a valid ground pass are eligible to receive a tick vaccination at VMS. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

Tick vaccinations for dependants will be given by VMS only on the dates below, however, they are also available from external health authorities throughout the year (contact information available on request). Please note that children under 12 years old should be vaccinated by a paediatrician or family doctor.

WHEN – Tick vaccinations will be available at VMS on the following dates:

·       Tuesday 13 February 2024 - 14:00-17:00

·       Wednesday 14 February 2024 - 14:00-17:00

·       Thursday 15 February 2024 - 14:00-17:00

·       Tuesday 27 February 2024 - 14:00-17:00

·       Wednesday 28 February 2024 - 14:00-17:00

·       Thursday 29 February 2024 - 14:00-17:00

HOW - Immunization is given as a series of three doses:

    • The first dose should preferably be given during the winter in order to provide protection by the beginning of the period of high tick activity.
    • The second dose is given from 14 days and up to 3 months after the first dose.
    • The third dose is given 5-12 months after the second dose.

Protection starts after the second injection and is complete after the third dose.

It is recommended that a booster is given 3 years after the third dose followed by subsequent boosters every 5 years. For those over 60 years of age, a booster is given every 3 years.

Please note that the TBE vaccination does NOT protect against Lyme disease (borreliosis) which can also be transmitted by tick bites.
