On 23 February, Director General Rafael Grossi visited the booth of the UN Disability and Inclusion Network during the Zero Project Conference 2024 and highlighted the Agency's commitment to advancing disability inclusion.

During his visit, Director General Grossi described how he witnessed firsthand "the power of unity in advancing inclusion across the United Nations" and emphasized that inclusion is not only a right but also essential for innovation and progress.

The UN Disability and Inclusion Network comprises UN personnel dedicated to promoting disability inclusion within Vienna-based UN organizations (VBOs). It includes individuals affected by disabilities themselves as well as those with close family members with disabilities.

The network serves as a support group and advocates for making the UN a more inclusive workplace, including by providing insights on accessibility and other related issues. The network is presently working closely with the Department of Management in identifying measures that would help advance disability inclusion at the Agency.

The IAEA, in collaboration with other Vienna-based Organizations (VBOs) participated in an event held this week to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December. Organized by the United Nations Disability Inclusion Network (DIN), the event showcased how the VBOs are creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace, including for people with disabilities.

The IAEA's commitment to diversity goes beyond this event. In 2021 Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi approved a Respect for Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Policy, which outlines principles and accountability measures to ensure all individuals are valued and supported, including those with disabilities.

The IAEA is also taking part in the Inter-Agency Support Group for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which aims to  exchange system-wide best practices on disability inclusion.

Margaret Doane, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Management spoke at the event. "At the IAEA, we're dedicated to integrating people with disabilities into every aspect of life, especially within our professional spaces. We believe that diversity is to be celebrated and we are committed to recognising and appreciating the variety of characteristics that make every individual," she said.

Ms Doane spoke about the IAEA's support for those affected by disability in other ways such as staff who have a child or close family member with a disability, stressing that the Agency's policies provide flexibility to accommodate their specific situations.

The Agency also collaborates with the other VBOs to enhance accessibility at the Vienna International Centre for staff, visitors and conference participants. In addition, the Division of Human Resources works actively with the DIN network, utilizing existing tools and building on successful projects such as the Dignity and Inclusion Learning Initiative to make progress.

The event, which included a performance by musicians from the Wiener Konzerthaus, was a vibrant celebration of diversity which highlighted the commitment of the IAEA and other VBOs to shaping an inclusive future for all.
