The VIC Medical Service (VMS) Tick vaccination Campaign starts on 07 February 2023. You can now sign to initiate your primary immunization or receive a booster shot (see details below) here. Appointments are available as per the calendar below.
The primary immunization is given as a series of three injections:
- 1st vaccination is preferably given in the cold season, to be protected by the beginning of the high tick activity.
- 2nd vaccination is given from 14 days up to 3 months after the 1st dose.
- 3rd vaccination is given 5-12 months after the 2nd dose.
Protection starts after the second injection and is complete after the third injection.
Following primary immunization, a first booster is recommended to be received 3 years after the 3rd vaccination. Subsequent boosters can be given every 5 years. Starting at 60 years of age, a booster is given every 3 years.
Why should you get vaccinated?
Early-Summer Meningoencephalitis is an illness that can be transmitted by a tick bite in some areas of Austria, such as the Vienna Woods, regions close to Vienna, Wachau, Styria, Carinthia, and Burgenland. The risk area is expanding. The vaccine does NOT protect against Lyme disease (Borreliosis).
Who is eligible?
Staff members and officially recognized dependants (children between 12-21 and other family members with a valid ground pass).
Children under 12 years should be vaccinated by a paediatrician or family doctor. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Tick vaccinations for dependants are given by the Medical Service during the campaign only but are available from outside health authorities throughout the year. Addresses are available upon request.
