European Union research funding notice




​The European Commission presented overnight the first calls for projects under Horizon 2020, the European Union's €80 billion research and innovation programme. Worth more than €15 billion over the first two years, the funding is intended to help boost Europe's knowledge-driven economy, and tackle issues that will make a difference in people's lives. This includes 12 areas that will be a focus for action in 2014-15:

- Personalising health and care (2014 budget: €549 million)

- Sustainable food security (€138 million)

- Blue growth: unlocking the potential of seas and oceans (€100 million)

- Digital security (€47 million)

- Smart cities and communities (€92 million)

- Competitive low-carbon energy (€359 million)

- Energy Efficiency (€98 million)

- Mobility for growth (€375 million)

- Waste: a resource to recycle, reuse and recover raw materials (€73 million)

- Water innovation: boosting its value for Europe (€67 million)

- Overcoming the crisis: new ideas, strategies and governance structures for Europe (€35 million)

- Disaster-resilience: safeguarding and securing society, including adapting to climate change (€72 million)

The European Research Council has also announced its first calls for proposals under Horizon 2020 (total budget of €1.7 billion in 2014).
