About Us

Fruit flies are one of the main pests affecting fruit crops worldwide. To prevent or minimize losses caused by these insect pests, phytosanitary programs have been implemented in various parts of the world.

The Western Hemisphere Fruit Fly Working Group originated in the 1980s when an initiative arose to bring together researchers and managers of Mediterranean fruit fly control programs in Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. The goal was to analyze and discuss priority research needs in order to more effectively address the challenges these programs faced. Subsequently, a similar group was formed to address the research needs of fruit fly control programs targeting Anastrepha species in the Americas. In 1990, following an agreement to merge these two groups, the Western Hemisphere Fruit Fly Working Group was established (see table).

Over the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of fruit fly control programs implemented in the Americas. Our Working Group has experienced similar growth. Since its formation, it has held seven meetings.

Under the networking framework, our objectives are:

  •  Promote the exchange of information, knowledge, ideas and experiences that allow feedback and innovation in research, development of methods and in operational control programs.
  •  Facilitate communication and promote collaboration between scientists, operational program managers and producers.
  •  To serve as a platform for collaboration between countries and international organizations.
  •  To contribute to the sustainable solution of the problems posed by fruit flies in the Americas.
