Publication ID: STI/PUB/2073

Publication Type: Nuclear Energy Series

Description: The decision to develop a nuclear power programme is a significant undertaking by any country. In preparing the necessary nuclear power infrastructure, there are numerous activities that must be completed in a timely manner in line with the objectives of the nuclear power programme. This publication defines three milestones in the development of the infrastructure necessary for introducing nuclear power and provides guidance on the activities that need to be carried out before each milestone. This new revision incorporates the experiences and feedback from several countries which have already completed or progressed significantly in all three phases. It also includes an annex for outlining the specific infrastructure considerations for Small Modular Reactors, which are expected to be deployed in a number of countries in the coming years. This publication is principally for decision-makers, advisers and senior managers in government, utilities and regulatory bodies in Member States interested in introducing nuclear power.

Publication ID: IAEA-TECDOC-2034

Publication Type: TECDOC Series

Description: The suitable design and quality of systems, structures, and components important to safety is vital for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants. The IAEA has developed this publication to provide information on approaches to evaluating the suitability of commercial grade items for use in nuclear power plant safety systems. Nuclear power plants in long-term operation have greatly benefited from the use of commercial-grade products, while the near-term deployment of advanced reactor designs, including small modular reactors, is expected to leverage such products to a large extent. The intended audience ranges from nuclear power plant senior management to experts procuring and controlling products and services vital for safety.

Publication Type: TECDOC Series

Description: The limitation of 235U enrichment is a current concern among IAEA Member States. In response, work has been undertaken to provide a platform to facilitate a comprehensive review of the current status, prospects and challenges associated with the use of fuels having enrichments higher than 5 % 235U in light water reactors. This publication is the outcome of two technical meetings and compiles the results and conclusions in terms of benefits to be obtained from the use of high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel, with due consideration of safety issues that arise from its use. It details technological options and corresponding issues regarding fuel and core design, safety analysis and assessments relevant to manufacturing, handling, transportation, storage, irradiation, and performance in normal and accident conditions.

Publication ID: IAEA-TECDOC-1694

Publication Type: TECDOC Series

Description: This publication presents the findings of an IAEA coordinated research project (CRP) focusing on validation of the safety and operational aspects of high temperature gas cooled reactors (HTGRs) under projected and actual operating conditions. Specifically, it documents the results of a benchmark analysis of the ASTRA critical facility at the Kurchatov Institute in the Russian Federation, with respect to the development of pebble bed high temperature modular reactor (PBMR-400). It also presents results of benchmark analyses performed for the HTR-10 experimental reactor in China, and the pebble bed micromodel test facility in South Africa. Such benchmarks include core height prediction for criticality, control rod worth and related differential reactivity and interference coefficients, and investigation of critical parameters for differing heights of the pebble bed high temperature modular reactor. Code to code comparison as well as comparison with actual experimental data make the information obtained from this CRP valuable for verification and validation of HTGR design and analysis codes for future developers of HTGR power plants. General results and conclusions as delineated by the participating Member States are described in the summary.

Design Features to Achieve Defence in Depth in Small and Medium Sized Reactors (SMRs)

Publication ID: STI/PUB/1399

Publication Type: Nuclear Energy Series

Description: This publication presents the state of the art in the design approaches used to achieve defence in depth in pressurized water reactors, pressurized light water reactors, cooled heavy water moderated reactors, high temperature gas cooled reactors, sodium cooled and lead cooled fast reactors, and non-conventional designs within the small and medium sized reactors (SMRs) range. Particular attention is given to those approaches that eliminate accident initiators or prevent accident consequences by incorporating inherent and passive safety features and passive systems into the safety design concepts of such reactors. The information presented in this publication could be used for assessment studies of innovative nuclear energy systems involving SMRs, as well as in evaluating the overall technical potential of innovative SMRs in Member States.
