The current safety core safety case relies upon data derived from the Materials Test Reactor (MTR) regarding the physical properties of the graphite core. This data is used within computer models to predict the future behaviour of the core.
In order to ensure that current prediction of the state of the core remain valid, the graphite samples are sent for analysis of the following physical properties:
Open Pore Volume
Density
Diffusivity
Dynamic Young’s Modulus
Coefficient of Thermal Expansion
Flexural Strength
Weight Loss |

The results of these measurements are compared to the original MTR data and assessed for any impact on the core safety case.
