Data interpretation and representation
Traditional presentation methods include summary statistics, as well as representation in maps depicting the measured pathways, the measurement results and in some cases, the interpolation of measured results. Although different interpolation algorithms can be used to produce visually appealing maps, Geo-statistics based interpretation of large data sets allows simulating a model that can be used to describe the statistical and geo-statistical variability of the measurement results, and to provide useful tools to represent an interpolation estimate of the distribution of the contaminants, to evaluate the volume of contaminated material and to support decision making in environmental remediation processes.
NSIL has developed a tool (R-markdown) to assist in data handling, inspection and production of different type of maps. The software is available for download !

More recently, the use of photogrammetry to enhance radiological mapping has been evaluated. Images are acquired by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a camera, followed by processing to build a digital elevation model (DEM) and reconstruct orthophotos that can be merged with the interpolation results from the radiological measurements
